France has got a new president. The socialist François Hollande has won the presidency with 51.62% of the votes while former president Nicolas Sarkozy only obtained 48.38%.
Now France will see a real change of power. It is only the second time in the history of the Fifth Republic (since 1948) that a socialist moves into the Elysée Palace. The first left-wing president was François Mitterrand – he was in power from 1981 to 1995. After him only Conservatives hold the highest office in France.
In his speech Hollande announced that he will focus on two aspects in particular during his term: “Social justice and the youth”. In his programme he also stated that he wants to reduce the public deficit until 2017 and refuses a European debt brake.
Nicolas Sarkozy said good bye to his supporters and wished François Hollande “good luck” for the upcoming tasks.
